Has netball ever been in the Olympics?
Netball has never featured at the Olympic Games, but announced last year that it would work with Netball Australia to seek inclusion at Brisbane 2032.
Before 1995, netball had no chance of being represented in the Olympic Games. It was not recognized as an Olympic sport, and therefore couldn't be included, no matter how hard people lobbied. Fortunately, after twenty years of hard lobbying by netball activists, the IOC gave netball Olympic recognized sport status.
Women's netball was included on the World Games programme from 1985 to 1993 and became part of the Commonwealth Games in 1998. It is set to be a big attraction at Birmingham 2022 and has been included on the list of core sports for Victoria 2026.
Netball Australia has declared its intent to see the sport played on the world's biggest stage – the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
Netball at the Olympics
Netball was one of 12 sports which was considered for inclusion in the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games, but it did not survive the first cut.
Since the first modern Games in 1896, 10 sports have disappeared completely from the Olympic schedule. These are croquet, cricket, Jeu de Paume, pelota, polo, roque, rackets, tug-of-war, lacrosse, and motor boating.
Netball is not watched in the same way as other team sports, like football and rugby, partially because a number of rules create misconceptions about the standard and nature of the game. Its label of being a 'non-contact' sport, for instance, fosters the misunderstanding that it must be a lesser version of basketball.
Netball in the United States is a sport which has only limited popular support. The sport is traditionally a female dominated sport. However, in the United States of America, there are few netball clubs, most play taking place between high school or college sides, almost entirely of females.
Netball became the sport for women because it embodied female attributes and was viewed by doctors, reformers, politicians, the media and middle class women as the best team sport for women and girls to play. In addition, netball prospered because women controlled it as their game outside of male influence.
Paris 2024 submitted its proposal to the IOC to integrate four new sports that are closely associated with youth and reward creativity and athletic performance. These sports are breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing.
Why is netball better than basketball?

One of the most obvious differences when you're looking at a basketball and a netball court is that netball players score goals by shooting through a hoop, without the backboard that's used in basketball. Arguably, this requires netball shooters to have a greater degree of accuracy.

What sports are not in the Olympics 2024? Karate and baseball/softball have been cut from the programme. Baseball - the national sport in Japan
